The other day I ran into a photographic project by Dina Goldstein titled “Fallen Princesses” while reading my daily blog fodder. Goldstein decided to place our beloved Disney Princesses in the real world, dealing with modern day issues such as: illness, addiction, self-image issues and war. I think the final product is a thought provoking look at our obsession with fairy tale endings. Below are some of the photos from the series:
What do you think of Goldstein’s interpretation? Do you relate to any of the “Fallen Princesses” in the series?

How about Dorothy finally gets home, Toto in tow, and gets hit with foreclosure proceedings? There’s no place like home?
Olive Oyl goes on a spiritual journey only to discover that what she has with Popeye is not love…
So we take off the tiaras and the glass slippers, and come to know when a frog is a frog, and realize that princes do not complete us, nor do wicked witches destroy us in the end. We write our own stories, and they are not fairy tales, they are the autobiographies of courageous women.
The End.
Wow, I love this series. I think I relate most to the Snow White one–the one where she’s got all these kids and the prince is kicking back in his La-Z Boy. I don’t have the kids, but I can relate to that total disconnect between her and the prince, and to her facial expression that seems to say, “This is it? This is what that fucking kiss led to?”
TOB – Dorothy & Toto foreclosure would be an excellent addition to this theme! Very possible in this economy. How many of our troops returned from the service to only find their homes in foreclosure and their families out on the streets?
I personally relate to the Belle character since body image is always a topic on my mind and something I struggle with constantly. In the movie, Belle was known for her beauty. But, what if Belle didn’t feel so beautiful on the inside and therefore, decided to get the plastic surgery? Or what if the reason why Belle was considered beautiful by her townfolks is because she did have all this plastic surgery done in the first place? Or what if as the years passed her by and the Beast (who turned into a handsome prince and now thinks he can do better than Belle) decided to leave her & this what she thought would make him happy?
Yeah! Fuckers. 😉
What a great series. thanks for sharing E!
